The Flower Farm

The Ruins at Sassafras…

…sits on land with a rich agricultural history. The Shakers grew food crops, medicinal herbs, and flowers and raised livestock. Mary Chess cultivated lilacs for her perfume business. The McDonalds herded sheep, cows, and peacocks and sewed coats made of sheepskin shipped from their family farm in Scotland.

Two-hundred years later, we're following the tradition.

Sassafras Flower Farm blooms …

… from May to November. You can cross the street from our venue and walk to the farm to select flowers for your bouquets, arbor spray, and bud vases. We’ll cut the flowers for you and keep them fresh in our air conditioned studio. Bring your photographer and wedding party, and make the afternoon a photo op.

We use an ancient farming practice called Hügelkultur (mound culture) – mounds from recycled logs, branches, grass clippings, and compost topped with soil. The mounds save water and require little fertilizer. Organic matter inside self-composts, makes landscape debris usable, and sequesters carbon. After your wedding, we compost the flowers and return them to the earth.

We offer Sassafras Farm flowers at wholesale prices for our couples. If you have a favorite regional flower that's not on our list, let us know by January, and we'll grow it for you.

Our farm flowers change every year, but you’ll likely find:
